July 14, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is approaching the 70,000 mark for dengue infections this year, with health authorities reporting a continued rise in cases across the country.

According to the National Dengue Control Unit, as of yesterday (13), a total of 69,951 dengue cases had been recorded nationwide. The latest figures indicate that the spread of the mosquito-borne disease remains a significant public health concern, particularly during the current rainy season.

Official data show that the cumulative case count stood at 68,672 on July 12, meaning a further 1,279 infections were confirmed within the following 24 hours.

The Western Province continues to account for the largest share of reported cases, with 33,127 infections recorded so far this year. Gampaha District has reported the highest number of cases at 14,464, while Colombo District follows closely with 14,004.

Health officials also noted that 14,572 dengue cases were reported during the first 13 days of July alone, reflecting the sustained increase in transmission. June remains the worst-affected month of the year to date, with 21,538 infections reported during the month.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant by eliminating stagnant water where mosquitoes breed and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms such as persistent fever, severe headaches or body aches develop.
