July 19, Colombo (LNW): Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe visited a private funeral parlour in Colombo to pay his final respects to former Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne, whose body is lying in state ahead of his funeral.
Wickramaratne, who served as Sri Lanka’s 35th Inspector General of Police, was found dead at his residence on July 17 after sustaining a gunshot wound.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the death is believed to have been a suicide. Investigators suspect that the firearm used in the incident was the weapon officially issued to his security officer. Further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death remain under way.
The former police chief will be accorded full police honours at his final rites, which are scheduled to take place tomorrow (20), in recognition of his years of service to the country.
