September 15, Colombo (LNW): The Government will continue investing in and upgrading the country’s education infrastructure as part of a broader effort to nurture a disciplined, knowledgeable and law-abiding younger generation, Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara said.
Speaking at a ceremony in Moratuwa marking the 150th anniversary of Prince and Princess of Wales’ Colleges, the Minister said the role of education extended well beyond academic achievement, with schools playing a crucial part in developing the character, values and sense of responsibility of young people.
He said strengthening the education system was essential to preparing students to become responsible citizens who understood and respected the law. Improving facilities and infrastructure in schools, he added, would form an important part of that wider effort.
The Minister was addressing the anniversary gathering held at the Prince of Wales’ College premises, where the two historic institutions commemorated a century and a half of service to education.
Established in 1876 through the initiative of philanthropist Sir Charles Henry de Soysa, Prince and Princess of Wales’ Colleges have developed a longstanding reputation for producing prominent figures who went on to serve the country in numerous fields.
Nanayakkara highlighted the institutions’ contribution to the legal profession and public life, noting that their alumni have included former Chief Justices of the Supreme Court, leading members of the Bar, diplomats and other distinguished professionals.
He said the schools’ 150-year legacy demonstrated the lasting influence educational institutions could have on national development and the formation of future leaders.
The anniversary celebrations were held under the patronage of Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr Harini Amarasuriya, who attended the event as chief guest.
The Minister said the Government’s education policies would seek to build on such longstanding traditions while creating better opportunities and environments for students across the country.
