Dengue Prevention Campaign to Cover 74 MOH Areas Across 13 Sri Lankan Districts

November 02, Colombo (LNW): Health authorities have launched preparations for an islandwide dengue prevention initiative targeting 74 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions in 13 districts, amid growing concerns over the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.

The National Dengue Control Unit has organised the special campaign in areas identified as being at increased risk, following assessments of entomological data indicating heightened mosquito activity.

Acting Director of the unit, Dr Kapila Kannangara, said the targeted intervention would be conducted from 9 to 14 November, with particular attention being given to locations where conditions are favourable for dengue transmission.

The campaign is expected to involve intensified mosquito control activities and preventive measures aimed at reducing breeding sites and limiting the spread of infection. Public cooperation will also be essential, particularly in ensuring that homes, workplaces and public spaces are kept free of stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed.

The latest figures highlight the scale of the challenge facing health authorities. Approximately 105,500 dengue infections have been recorded across the country so far, while the disease has claimed 79 lives.

Health officials continue to stress the importance of early preventive action, as eliminating mosquito breeding grounds remains one of the most effective ways of reducing the risk of transmission.

Residents in the identified areas are encouraged to pay particular attention to their surroundings and cooperate with public health teams during the special operation.
