September 20, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is expected to remain under unsettled weather conditions tomorrow (21), with several parts of the country likely to experience spells of rain and some locations potentially receiving more than 100 millimetres of rainfall, the Department of Meteorology said.
In its forecast issued at 2.00pm today (20), the department said a low-pressure area had developed over the Bay of Bengal, to the north-east of Sri Lanka near the Andaman region. While the system is not expected to move directly towards the island, winds associated with it are likely to continue drawing moisture towards Sri Lanka, maintaining wet conditions, particularly across the south-west.
The Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, together with the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, are expected to receive showers or thundershowers at intervals. Some locations in these areas could record rainfall exceeding 100mm.
The North-Central Province and Mannar District may experience several spells of rain, while parts of the Uva Province and the Batticaloa and Ampara districts could see showers or thundershowers developing after 2.00pm tomorrow.
The Meteorology Department has also forecast occasionally strong winds, reaching around 30 to 40 kilometres per hour, along the western slopes of the Central Hills, across the North-Central and North-Western provinces and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.
With thunderstorms possible in several areas, members of the public have been urged to remain cautious and take appropriate precautions against sudden localised strong winds and lightning. The department particularly advised people to remain alert when conditions deteriorate during thundershowers.
