September 22, Colombo (LNW): The Attorney General has asked the Chief Justice to appoint a three-member High Court bench to hear the case arising from the alleged assault on the ‘Gota Go Gama’ protest site.
The Attorney General’s Department said indictments are being prepared against 20 individuals in connection with the incident, among them former Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon and former Minister Johnston Fernando.
According to the Department, the indictment will contain 328 charges relating to the alleged events surrounding the attack on the protest site.
The case will also include allegations concerning serious injuries sustained by 56 people during the incident, with charges expected to be filed in relation to the alleged causing of grievous harm.
The request for a special three-judge bench now places the case before the Chief Justice for consideration as preparations continue for the formal filing of the indictments.
