October 05, Colombo (LNW): More than 5,000 houses built with Government assistance are set to be handed over to members of the public today as part of events marking World Habitat Day, Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr H.M. Susil Ranasinghe said.
The nationwide handover is being held alongside this year’s World Habitat Day observances, which focus on the theme ‘Adequate Housing for All’.
The main commemorative programme will take place under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya, with housing and community development placed at the centre of the day’s activities.
Minister Ranasinghe said the Government had also organised a National Housing Week to coincide with the World Habitat Day programme. Activities are being conducted across the island as part of efforts to draw greater attention to housing needs and expand access to suitable homes.
Speaking to News 1st, the Minister said the initiative was intended to extend housing support to communities across the country while reinforcing the Government’s focus on providing people with secure and adequate accommodation.
The large-scale distribution of completed homes marks one of the key activities planned for this year’s World Habitat Day programme, with the Government seeking to highlight housing as an essential component of social and economic well-being.
