Nearly 3,000 Cited for Seat Belt Violations on Expressways

October 05, Colombo (LNW): Nearly 3,000 people have faced legal action for failing to comply with mandatory seat belt requirements on Sri Lanka’s expressways, according to the Police.

Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety, W.P.J. Senadheera, said the majority of motorists and passengers had been observing the new requirement, but enforcement officers continued to encounter a number of violations.

The regulation, which came into effect on 19 September, requires every person travelling in a vehicle on an expressway to wear a seat belt.

Police have warned that the requirement applies to passengers as well as drivers, making individual compliance essential for improving road safety.

Authorities are continuing to monitor vehicles using the expressway network and take action against those who disregard the regulation, as part of wider efforts to reduce the risk of serious injury in road accidents.
