Sri Lanka and China Prepare to Celebrate 70 Years of Diplomatic Relations in 2027

October 10, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka and China are preparing to commemorate two significant milestones in their longstanding relationship in 2027, marking seven decades of formal diplomatic ties and 75 years since the landmark Rubber-Rice Pact established an important foundation for bilateral economic cooperation.

Preparations for the anniversaries were discussed during a meeting between Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath, and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Wei Huaxiang on October 10.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the two countries and coordinating activities to mark the historic occasions, which are expected to highlight the evolution of their political, economic and commercial relationship.

The Rubber-Rice Pact, signed in 1952, represented a significant step in Sri Lanka-China relations at a time when both countries were navigating challenging international economic conditions. Under the agreement, Sri Lanka supplied rubber to China in exchange for rice, helping address essential commodity requirements while establishing a framework for mutually beneficial trade.

The agreement is widely regarded as an important chapter in the development of economic links between the two nations, demonstrating how cooperation on practical trade requirements helped lay the groundwork for a broader bilateral partnership.

Formal diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and China were established in 1957, five years after the signing of the pact. Since then, the relationship has expanded to encompass a range of areas, including trade, infrastructure development, investment and diplomatic engagement.

The twin anniversaries in 2027 will therefore provide an opportunity for both countries to reflect on the historical foundations of their partnership while considering avenues for future cooperation.

The planned commemorations are also expected to highlight the enduring significance of the Rubber-Rice Pact and its role in shaping the economic relationship that preceded the establishment of formal diplomatic ties.

As preparations move forward, the two governments are expected to continue discussions on activities that will recognise these milestones and showcase the development of Sri Lanka-China relations over the decades.

The anniversaries will offer both countries an opportunity to reaffirm their longstanding engagement and explore ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the years ahead.
