October 10, Colombo (LNW): The Government has reviewed progress under the Clean Colombo programme, a key component of the national Clean Sri Lanka initiative, as authorities seek to improve sanitation, waste disposal and the overall environmental quality of the capital.
The review meeting was held at the Presidential Secretariat on the morning of October 09, chaired by Secretary to the President Dr Nandika Sanath Kumanayake. Officials assessed the work completed so far and discussed ongoing projects and future action plans aimed at addressing Colombo’s persistent urban environmental challenges.
The programme places particular emphasis on upgrading sewerage systems, restoring drainage canals, improving waste management practices and enhancing the appearance of public spaces. These measures are intended to create a cleaner, healthier and more attractive urban environment while addressing infrastructure problems that can contribute to flooding, pollution and unsanitary conditions.
Representatives from several government institutions involved in the programme participated in discussions on implementation progress and the coordination of planned activities. The key agencies include the Colombo Municipal Council, Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation, Urban Development Authority, Road Development Authority, Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, and Sri Lanka Railways.
Their involvement reflects the broad range of responsibilities required to improve Colombo’s urban environment, from maintaining roads and drainage infrastructure to managing coastal areas, railway properties and municipal waste.
During the meeting, officials examined the activities being undertaken by the respective institutions and considered how existing plans could be implemented more effectively. Coordinating the work of multiple agencies remains important to preventing overlapping efforts and ensuring that improvements in one area are supported by developments in others.
The discussion also highlighted the need to incorporate other relevant Clean Sri Lanka projects being carried out across the country into the Clean Colombo programme. This approach is intended to ensure that initiatives addressing environmental protection, social responsibility and public behaviour contribute to a common strategy for improving the capital.
Beyond infrastructure development, the wider Clean Sri Lanka initiative seeks to encourage lasting changes in public attitudes and everyday practices. Its objectives include promoting environmental responsibility, strengthening social well-being and fostering ethical standards throughout society.
The Clean Colombo programme therefore extends beyond improving the physical appearance of the city. Its success will also depend on effective public participation, responsible waste disposal and sustained cooperation between government institutions and residents.
With Colombo serving as the country’s principal commercial and administrative centre, improvements to its infrastructure and environmental management could deliver wider benefits for residents, businesses and visitors. Continued coordination and consistent implementation will be essential to translating the programme’s objectives into visible and lasting improvements across the city.
