Tusker Kavanthissa Succumbed to Gunshot Wounds: Minister

October 20, Colombo (LNW): Tusker Kavanthissa died from injuries caused by gunfire, Minister of Environment Dhammika Patabendi informed Parliament today (20), shedding further light on the circumstances surrounding the elephant’s death.

The Minister explained that the animal had shown signs of recovery following its initial treatment but subsequently developed health complications and became ill again before eventually dying.

Given the seriousness of the case, veterinary expertise was sought from specialists in Thailand and India to obtain additional professional advice on the elephant’s condition and treatment.

Meanwhile, investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding Kavanthissa’s death. Authorities are also examining whether there was a deliberate conspiracy to kill the tusker, the Minister said.

The inquiry is expected to focus on clarifying how the animal sustained its fatal injuries and whether any individuals were involved in an intentional act against it.
