Supreme Court to Examine Legal Challenges to Proposed Anti-Terrorism Bill

October 20, Colombo (LNW): The Supreme Court is due to consider a series of legal challenges today (20) against the Government’s proposed Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill, which has been submitted to Parliament.

According to reports, 22 petitions have been lodged seeking judicial intervention over the proposed legislation, reflecting the growing legal scrutiny surrounding the Bill before it proceeds further through the legislative process.

The cases are scheduled to be heard by a three-member Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justices Achala Wengappuli and Sampath Abeykoon.

The hearing is expected to provide an opportunity for the petitioners to present their objections to the proposed law, while the Court considers the legal issues raised in the applications. The proceedings will be closely watched as the legislation faces scrutiny at the country’s highest judicial level.

Further developments will depend on the submissions made before the bench and the Court’s subsequent directions.
