October 26, Colombo (LNW): The Police Media Division has cautioned the public to remain vigilant when using online dating platforms and social networking applications, warning that fraudsters are exploiting personal relationships to deceive unsuspecting individuals and obtain money.
According to the police, scammers often approach victims by initiating online friendships, expressing romantic interest or making promises of marriage. Once trust has been established, these individuals may use various tactics to manipulate victims into transferring money or disclosing sensitive financial information.
Authorities have also advised mobile phone users to avoid downloading unfamiliar applications or software from suspicious sources, as these could potentially be used to access personal information or compromise the security of their devices.
The police have stressed that people should never disclose banking credentials, one-time passwords (OTPs), account passwords or other confidential details to individuals they have met online. Sharing personal photographs and videos with strangers has also been discouraged, as such material could be misused for intimidation, blackmail or other fraudulent activities.
Members of the public are urged to verify the identities of people they encounter online and to be particularly wary of individuals who request money, demand urgent financial assistance or encourage them to install unknown applications.
