NBRO Issues Updated Landslide Alerts for Several Districts Across Sri Lanka

October 26, Colombo (LNW): The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has revised its landslide warning notice in response to the prevailing adverse weather conditions, placing several Divisional Secretariat areas under heightened alerts.

The latest advisory was issued today (26) at 9.00 am and will remain valid until 9.00 am tomorrow (27).

Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant and pay attention to changing ground conditions as rainfall continues.

Under the revised notice, Level 2 (Amber) warnings, indicating that the public should be alert, have been issued for the following areas:

  • Kalutara District: Walallawita and Bulathsinhala Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
  • Kegalle District: Dehiowita and Galigamuwa Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
  • Nuwara Eliya District: Ambagamuwa Korale and Norwood Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
  • Ratnapura District: Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Pelmadulla, Elapatha, Ayagama and Nivithigala Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

Meanwhile, Level 1 (Yellow) warnings, advising residents to remain vigilant, have been issued for the following locations:

  • Galle District: Thawalama Divisional Secretariat Division.
  • Gampaha District: Attanagalla Divisional Secretariat Division.
  • Kalutara District: Madurawala, Beruwala, Millaniya and Horana Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
  • Kandy District: Ududumbara, Pasbage Korale, Udapalatha and Udunuwara Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
  • Kegalle District: Kegalle, Mawanella, Deraniyagala, Warakapola, Aranayaka, Ruwanwella and Yatiyanthota Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
  • Kurunegala District: Narammala and Kurunegala Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
  • Ratnapura District: Kiriella and Opanayake Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

The warnings come amid unfavourable weather conditions that could increase the risk of slope instability in vulnerable locations. Residents in areas covered by the alerts, particularly those living near steep slopes, hillsides and locations with a history of landslides, should exercise caution and monitor official announcements.

People are also advised to watch for warning signs such as cracks developing in the ground or buildings, unusual changes in water flow, newly emerging springs and trees or structures beginning to tilt. Any such changes should be reported to the relevant authorities promptly.

Residents should follow instructions issued by local officials and emergency services, particularly if conditions deteriorate or evacuation advice is given. The public is encouraged to remain attentive throughout the warning period, which ends at 9.00 am on 27 October, unless a further notice is issued.
