Binod Chaudhary Eyes New Investment Opportunities in Sri Lanka

By: Isuru Parakrama

October 27, Colombo (LNW): Nepalese billionaire and business leader Binod Chaudhary is considering further investments in Sri Lanka, signalling continued confidence in the country’s economic prospects and its potential to attract long-term foreign capital.

Chaudhary, Chairman of the Chaudhary Group, is exploring opportunities to expand the conglomerate’s existing presence in the island, with financial services, hospitality and other promising sectors among the areas under consideration.

The Group already has a foothold in Sri Lanka through its investment in Union Bank and its involvement in the hotel and tourism industry. Any expansion of these interests could deepen its engagement with the local economy while creating opportunities for additional capital investment, employment and business development.

“We believe Sri Lanka has tremendous long-term potential. Our existing investments, including in banking and hospitality, have given us valuable experience in the market, and we remain open to expanding our investments where we see the right opportunities,” Chaudhary said.

His interest comes at a time when Sri Lanka is seeking to strengthen investor confidence and attract fresh capital to support economic recovery and sustainable growth. The country’s tourism industry, financial services sector, infrastructure development and consumer market are among the areas that could offer opportunities for international businesses looking to establish or expand their regional presence.

Sri Lanka’s geographical position along major international shipping routes, established tourism appeal and access to regional markets are considered important advantages for investors. Its workforce and potential for growth in service-oriented industries may also offer opportunities for businesses seeking to build a long-term presence in South Asia.

For the Chaudhary Group, expanding its Sri Lankan operations would build on its existing investments and market experience. However, any new commitments would depend on the availability of suitable projects, commercial viability and the prospects for establishing partnerships capable of delivering sustainable returns.

The Group is expected to continue assessing potential investments and collaborations, with an emphasis on opportunities that can generate lasting economic value. While no specific new project or investment amount has been announced, Chaudhary’s remarks indicate that Sri Lanka remains under consideration as a market for the Group’s future expansion.

Further investment, if realised, could strengthen the Group’s position in Sri Lanka while supporting activity in sectors that contribute to employment, tourism development and the broader services economy.
