November 05, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka and Kenya are looking to broaden their diplomatic and economic engagement, with discussions between Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya and Kenya’s Deputy President, Professor Kithure Kindiki, focusing on potential areas of collaboration between the two nations.
The talks were held on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda, where the two leaders exchanged views on strengthening existing ties and identifying fresh opportunities for cooperation.
Both representatives acknowledged the longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and Kenya, emphasising the importance of building on their established relationship through closer engagement and mutually beneficial initiatives.
Agriculture, international trade and investment emerged as key areas of discussion, alongside the growing importance of climate financing. The two sides also considered how stronger partnerships in these sectors could create economic opportunities while supporting sustainable development objectives.
With both countries facing evolving economic and environmental challenges, closer cooperation could open doors for knowledge-sharing, investment partnerships and the exchange of expertise, particularly in agriculture and climate-related initiatives.
According to the Office of the Prime Minister, the meeting provided an opportunity to examine ways of expanding bilateral engagement and advancing cooperation in fields where both countries share common interests.
The discussions reflect Sri Lanka’s continued efforts to strengthen its international partnerships and explore wider economic and diplomatic opportunities through its engagement with Commonwealth member states.
