November 05, Colombo (LNW): Electricity consumers can expect some relief in the coming months after the National System Operator (NSO) confirmed that it does not intend to request an upward revision of electricity tariffs for the October–December period of 2026.
The position was outlined at a stakeholder consultation held on 5 November, where the proposed tariff structure for the final three months of the year was discussed.
The NSO’s decision is understood to be largely influenced by the country’s current water storage situation and expectations of higher-than-average rainfall associated with the prevailing El Niño weather conditions.
With existing reservoir reserves and further rainfall anticipated, hydropower facilities are expected to maintain a sufficient level of electricity production. This could help reduce reliance on more expensive alternative sources of generation, easing pressure on electricity costs.
The decision offers a positive outlook for households and businesses already managing electricity expenses, particularly as stable power generation remains essential to keeping energy costs under control.
Nevertheless, the NSO’s announcement should be viewed as its position ahead of the proposed tariff revision rather than a final regulatory determination. The applicable electricity rates will remain subject to the established approval process.
