Historic 100 MW Solar PV Project Marks a Milestone in Sri Lanka’s Pursuit of Sustainable Energy

Date:

February 09, Colombo (LNW): In a landmark move towards sustainable energy, Rividhanavi (Private) Limited and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) sealed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) on February 8, 2024. This agreement paves the way for a groundbreaking 100 MW Solar PV Project located in Siyambalanduwa, marking the first-ever large-scale solar initiative in Sri Lanka. This venture signifies a crucial shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources for the nation.

The consortium leading this transformative project comprises Lakdhanavi Limited, Windforce PLC, and The Blue Circle Pte Limited. Lakdhanavi Limited, with over 28 years of experience as the pioneer and largest power plant developer in Sri Lanka, brings both local expertise and international prowess to the forefront of this initiative. Their commitment to steering the country towards a cleaner, greener future is evident in their role as the lead partner in the consortium.

The Solar Park Facility, spanning 220 hectares in the Siyambalanduwa Divisional Secretariat area in the Monaragala district, will feature cutting-edge photovoltaic technology integrated with battery storage. The project also includes the construction of a new 27km 132kV transmission line, a new 132kV grid substation in Siyambalanduwa, and the augmentation of the 132kV grid substation in Monaragala.

With a substantial investment of 150 million USD, this mega project is expected to be connected to the national grid by mid-2025. The solar park’s capacity to generate 100 MW of clean, renewable energy is a significant step towards achieving the Sri Lankan government’s ambitious target of 70% power generation from renewables by 2030.
