Direct Vietnam Flights Unlock Sri Lanka’s Hidden Investment Potential

By: Staff Writer

July 23, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has long depended on traditional source markets such as India and the United Kingdom to sustain visitor arrivals. However, a major aviation development scheduled for August 18 could quietly reshape the country’s tourism landscape and create new business opportunities that extend well beyond hotels and airlines. While much attention has focused on increasing visitor numbers, the deeper economic significance of direct connectivity with Vietnam lies in its potential to unlock investment, trade and specialized tourism markets that have remained largely untapped.

Speaking at the seminar Amazing Vietnam is Calling, Let’s Vietjet in Colombo, Vietnam’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Trinh Thi Tam, described Sri Lanka as a “hidden gem in the Indian Ocean,” stressing that logistical barriers—not lack of interest—have prevented stronger tourism and commercial exchanges between the two countries.

Until now, travellers between Colombo and Vietnam have depended on lengthy transits through third countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Even Vietnamese diplomatic staff stationed in Sri Lanka have experienced these challenges firsthand. According to the Ambassador, the launch of Vietjet Air’s direct Ho Chi Minh City-Colombo service will dramatically reduce travel time while making journeys more affordable and convenient.

The airline will operate three weekly return flights every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Although the service appears to be a tourism initiative, the broader economic implications deserve closer examination.

Tourism figures already suggest growing demand. Sri Lanka welcomed just over 3,000 Vietnamese visitors throughout 2025. Yet during only the first six months of 2026, arrivals had already exceeded 4,000, indicating accelerating interest even before the introduction of direct flights.

National tourism performance provides additional context. Tourist arrivals surpassed 1.14 million by mid-2026, demonstrating the sector’s continued recovery. Industry observers increasingly recognise that diversification into fast-growing Southeast Asian markets is essential to reduce dependence on a limited number of traditional markets.

The commercial opportunities extend beyond conventional leisure tourism. Both Sri Lanka and Vietnam share strong Buddhist traditions, creating significant prospects for specialised pilgrimage tourism. The Ambassador noted that many Vietnamese visitors are particularly interested in Sri Lankan Buddhism, which they regard as remarkably pure and original. This creates immediate opportunities for heritage tourism operators, religious institutions and travel companies to develop tailored tour packages.

Business investment represents another overlooked dimension. Increased visitor flows typically stimulate demand for accommodation, transport, retail, logistics and supporting infrastructure. Stronger air connectivity may therefore encourage greater commercial engagement between businesses in both countries while supporting trade and investment initiatives.

However, the long-term success of the route will depend on coordinated action. Government agencies, tourism authorities and private travel operators will need to develop attractive tourism products and market both destinations effectively.

The direct Vietnam connection is therefore more than a new airline route. It represents an opportunity to transform a previously underdeveloped tourism relationship into a broader economic partnership capable of generating sustained business investment and long-term growth for both nations.
