The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber-level Warm Weather Advisory, warning that heat levels could reach “Caution” during the day on 25 July in the Eastern Province and in Kilinochchi, Mullaittivu, Vavuniya, Polonnaruwa, and Monaragala districts.

The heat index — a measure of how hot it actually feels on the body, combining humidity and temperature — is expected to hit the 39–45°C “Caution” range in parts of these areas. At this level, prolonged exposure and activity can cause fatigue and, with continued exertion, heat cramps.

The department clarified that the heat index is not the same as the forecast air temperature, but reflects the toll heat and humidity together take on the human body. It was developed with input from the Ministry of Health.

Authorities have advised the public to stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade, check on elderly or unwell relatives and neighbours, avoid leaving children unattended in vehicles, limit strenuous outdoor activity, and wear light-coloured, lightweight clothing.
