August 01, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka celebrated a landmark sporting achievement after 23-year-old javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage captured the men’s javelin title at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, bringing home the nation’s first Commonwealth gold medal in two decades.
Competing in the final at Scotstoun Stadium in Scotland, Pathirage delivered a sensational performance, producing a championship-winning throw of 89.75 metres with his second attempt. None of his rivals were able to surpass the distance, securing the young Sri Lankan athlete a memorable victory on one of the biggest stages in Commonwealth sport.
The triumph represents Sri Lanka’s sixth Commonwealth Games gold medal and its first since weightlifter Chintana Vidanage topped the podium at the 2006 Games. It also marks a historic breakthrough for Sri Lankan athletics, ending a 76-year wait for a Commonwealth athletics gold medal. The country’s previous athletics champion was Duncan White, who won the men’s 440-yard hurdles at the 1950 Games in Auckland.
Pathirage’s victory was made even more significant by the quality of the competition. He finished ahead of India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who secured the silver medal with a best effort of 85.83 metres, while fellow Indian athlete Yash Vir Singh claimed bronze after recording 85.41 metres.
The outstanding performance has further boosted Sri Lanka’s campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, taking the country’s medal tally to two. Earlier in the competition, para athlete Palitha Bandara opened Sri Lanka’s account by winning silver in the men’s discus throw F42-44/F61-64 event.
