August 10, Colombo (LNW): The Department of Meteorology has issued a strong wind and rough sea warning for several coastal areas, with the advisory remaining in force until 7.00 am tomorrow (11).
According to the latest forecast, sea conditions off the southern and south-eastern coast, stretching from Matara to Pottuvil through Hambantota, are expected to become very rough at times. Winds in these waters could strengthen to more than 60 kmph, prompting authorities to advise fishing and naval communities to avoid going to sea until conditions improve.
Rough seas are also forecast in several other maritime zones. Areas extending from Batticaloa to Chilaw via Trincomalee, Kankesanthurai and Mannar could experience winds of up to 50 kmph, while similar conditions are expected in the waters between Galle and Matara.
Fishermen and naval personnel operating in the affected areas have been urged to exercise extreme caution and remain alert to changes in weather conditions.
The Meteorology Department has also warned that sudden increases in wind speed and exceptionally rough seas may occur during thundershowers, creating additional risks for vessels already at sea.
Authorities have called on fishing and naval communities to closely monitor subsequent weather bulletins and take appropriate precautions based on the latest forecasts.
