August 30, Colombo (LNW): Parliament is due to consider legislation seeking to remove the position of Chief of Defence Staff on 9 September, with lawmakers scheduled to vote on the proposed measure at 5.00pm that day.
The office was created to strengthen coordination between the country’s three armed services and provide a central mechanism for overseeing joint military operations.
However, the Government has now moved to discontinue the position, arguing that the role no longer serves a necessary purpose under current circumstances. The proposed change is also being viewed in the context of efforts to streamline defence administration and contain military expenditure.
The parliamentary vote will determine whether the proposed restructuring receives legislative approval.
