September 17, Colombo (LNW): A new government-backed housing initiative aimed at helping young people who have moved on from institutional care, along with children living in unsafe or vulnerable circumstances, is set to commence today.
Known as the “Diviyata Saviyak” Housing Assistance Programme, the initiative will be officially launched at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The scheme forms part of the Government’s broader commitment to improving living conditions for vulnerable sections of society. It is being implemented under the theme “A Strong Foundation For A Beautiful Life”, reflecting the vision of a “Dignified Life – A Secure Country” set out in the Government’s policy framework, A Rich Country – A Beautiful Life.
Financial assistance has been earmarked under the 2026 Budget to help beneficiaries secure more stable housing. A sum of Rs. 2 million will be allocated to each beneficiary, with 834 individuals identified to receive support under the programme.
The initiative is intended to provide eligible young people with a more secure foundation as they move towards independent living and greater social stability.
