September 20, Colombo (LNW): The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has stepped up action over complaints concerning the quality of certain brands of baby diapers available on the Sri Lankan market, including reports of products tearing or deteriorating while being used.
Following the complaints, CAA officials conducted an investigation into the supply chain and distribution network of the products in question. The inquiry led authorities to two businesses operating in Kottawa and Pettah, where raids were subsequently carried out.
The businesses were found to be displaying and distributing imported baby diapers at wholesale level without the required details of the registered importer. The missing information included the importer’s name, address, telephone number and website, contrary to the requirements set out under Order No. 85.
Legal proceedings were initiated against both businesses over the alleged labelling violations.
When the cases were heard before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court, representatives of both businesses pleaded guilty to the charges. The Kottawa business was subsequently ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000, while the Pettah-based business was fined Rs. 25,000.
The CAA has meanwhile reminded consumers to inspect the packaging of sanitary products before making a purchase, particularly to ensure that the mandatory details of the registered importer are clearly displayed.
Consumers who encounter problems such as tearing, damage or other quality concerns while using baby diapers are also encouraged to keep the product packaging and their purchase receipt.
The Authority said these items could be important when submitting a complaint and urged affected consumers to contact its 1977 hotline during official working hours.
