September 24, Colombo (LNW): The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber-level warning for heavy rainfall, with several provinces, including the Western Province, expected to experience periods of intense rain during the next 24 hours.
The alert was issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 7.00am today and will remain in force until 7.00am tomorrow.
Meteorologists forecast intermittent showers and thundershowers across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western and Southern provinces as unsettled weather conditions persist.
Some areas could receive more than 100 millimetres of rain, raising the possibility of localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and locations where drainage capacity is limited.
Authorities have also highlighted the potential for landslides in vulnerable areas, particularly in districts that have already experienced significant rainfall.
Residents in flood- and landslide-prone locations have been urged to remain alert to changing weather conditions and take appropriate precautions. People are also advised to pay close attention to further warnings and updates issued by the Meteorology Department as the situation develops.
The public, particularly those travelling through areas affected by heavy rain, is encouraged to exercise caution as sudden downpours could result in reduced visibility, waterlogged roads and difficult travel conditions.
