Muslim parliamentarians representing different political parties in Sri Lanka have appealed to Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to consider granting royal clemency to Sri Lankan national Sivarasa Anujan, who is facing imprisonment and a substantial financial penalty in the Kingdom.
In a letter dated September 21, 2026, and signed by Muslim MPs from across the political spectrum, including Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih, the parliamentarians requested that the authorities consider granting relief through a reduction or remission of Anujan’s sentence and financial penalty.
The MPs said the fine imposed on Anujan was beyond the financial means of the Sri Lankan worker, whose family is heavily dependent on his earnings for their livelihood.
They also noted that Anujan had expressed regret and remorse over the incident for which he was convicted, while conveying an apology and respect for Prophet Muhammad and the religious sentiments of Muslims.
The parliamentarians stressed that their appeal did not seek to challenge Saudi Arabia’s laws, sovereignty or judicial processes, and reaffirmed their respect for the country’s legal and judicial institutions.
Instead, they said the request was made on humanitarian grounds, while highlighting the longstanding relations and goodwill between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia.
