Japan has launched its first project in Sri Lanka under the Japan Fund for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JFJCM), aimed at supporting the country’s transition towards clean energy.

Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka, Naoaki Kamoshida, participated today in the signing ceremony for the “Rooftop Solar Aggregation and Virtual Net Metering Project.”

The project is supported by a USD 5.5 million grant from the JFJCM, established at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with the support of the Government of Japan.

As part of the initiative, high-efficiency High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS) distribution lines will be installed along approximately 140 kilometres between Negombo and Galle. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to reduce technical energy losses by up to 30%.

The project will also introduce Sri Lanka’s first distribution grid Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), with a capacity of 6 MWh. The system will store excess solar power generated during the daytime and supply electricity during periods of peak evening demand.

The initiative combines low-carbon technologies with international cooperation to support Sri Lanka’s clean energy transition and its target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sri Lanka as a long-term partner through investments in advanced clean energy technologies and sustainable infrastructure.
