Melbourne and Victoria rocked overnight by state’s biggest earthquake in three years

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck east of Melbourne early Saturday, with tremors felt across a wide area of Victoria.

According to Geoscience Australia, the earthquake occurred at around 2.01 a.m. at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres.

The epicentre was located near Arawata, northwest of Leongatha in South Gippsland, about 130 kilometres east of Melbourne.

More than 15,000 people had reported feeling the earthquake to Geoscience Australia, with the number continuing to increase.

Tremors were reported across Melbourne and surrounding areas, with reports extending east towards Traralgon, north to Mansfield and west as far as Geelong and Torquay.

Several residents said they were awakened by the shaking. One Melbourne resident reported that the tremor lasted around 10 seconds and caused their house to move.

There were no immediate reports of injuries following the earthquake.

Victoria’s State Emergency Service advised anyone requiring emergency assistance as a result of the earthquake to contact the SES.
