Gnanasara Thero to Be Produced Before Court Following Arrest

October 04, Colombo (LNW): Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero is expected to appear before court today following his arrest at a forest monastery in Thiniyawala, Kalutara, where police located him while an active arrest warrant was in force.

The Buddhist monk was taken into custody last night after authorities found him at the Thiniyawala Aranya Senasanaya. He was subsequently transported to the Colombo Crime Division for further proceedings.

The arrest follows an order by the Court of Appeal, which had issued an open warrant for the Thero after imposing a prison sentence on him in connection with a contempt of court case.

The court had also prohibited him from travelling overseas, meaning he was required to remain within Sri Lanka while the legal proceedings were being enforced.

Following his detention, the authorities are expected to present Gnanasara Thero before court today, where further directions regarding his custody and the implementation of the court’s earlier orders are likely to be determined.
