Shiranthi Rajapaksa Held Under Special Security at Magazine Prison

Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who was remanded following her arrest by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), is being held under special security at the Magazine Prison in Welikada.

Prisons Media Spokesman and Commissioner Senaka Palletenna said Rajapaksa is being kept in a secure section of the women’s wing of the prison.

She was arrested over allegations concerning the misappropriation of Rs. 10 million obtained from a state bank.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday (07) ordered that she remain in remand custody until October 13. The court also directed that she be taken to a private hospital in Colombo for medical treatment.

Rajapaksa was subsequently taken to the Magazine Prison in Welikada in a prison bus following the court order.

Commissioner Palletenna said prison authorities would make the necessary arrangements to ensure she receives the medical care ordered by the court.
