Sources indicate that Faizer Musthafa, a Member of Parliament representing the New Democratic Front (NDF) and a President’s Counsel, is being considered for appointment as the Speaker of Sri Lanka’s Parliament.
The development comes amid growing pressure on incumbent Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, against whom the opposition has submitted a no-confidence motion. An investigation by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) is also reportedly underway against him, creating a situation in which he may be compelled to resign.
According to sources, high-level discussions were held on October 20 to consider a potential successor should the Speaker’s position become vacant.
During these discussions, Faizer Musthafa was reportedly proposed as a candidate who could secure the agreement of both the government and the opposition.
Musthafa is an experienced parliamentarian with several years of parliamentary service. As a President’s Counsel, he also brings extensive legal expertise and is proficient in all three languages.
His diplomatic capabilities were also demonstrated through his voluntary involvement in efforts to save Sivarasa Anojan, who had been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia.
However, no official announcement confirming his potential appointment has been made, and the reported discussions remain subject to further developments.
