Evening thundershowers and heavy rain expected across SL: Public advised to stay cautious

August 11, Colombo (LNW): Atmospheric conditions are favourable for development of evening thundershowers in the island during the next few days, and showers or thundershowers, therefore, may occur at times in Western an Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts, the Department of Meteorology said in its daily weather forecast today (11).

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere of the island during the evening or night as well, the statement read.

Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in Northern, North-central, Eastern and Uva provinces.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Condition of Rain:
Showers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island during the afternoon or night.
Winds:
Winds will be westerly to south-westerly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
State of Sea:
The sea areas off the coasts extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota may be fairly rough at times. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
