Sri Lanka and Singapore explore exchanging of renewable energy

By: Staff Writer

Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka and Singapore explore the possibility of transmitting Solar and Wind energy between the two countries.

President Ranil Wickremasinghe during his recent visit to Singapore has held discussions with Singaporean authorities’ on ways and means to connect Singapore power grid with solar and wind energy generated by proposed projects in the North and East

Presidential Chief of Staff Sagala ratnayake has been entrusted with the task of carrying forward these discussions with Singaporean authorities on the direction of the President.

Sri Lanka could develop between 500 to 1000 MegaWatts of offshore wind power if risks to private investors could be reduced and the grid is upgraded to absorb the power, a statement by the energy ministry said.

Sri Lanka has good conditions for offshore wind, with the most of the more than 50 GigaWatts of potential being held in the western and southern coasts, according to a roadmap developed with the World Bank and International Finance Corporation.

“However, the roadmap analysis found that not all of this potential will be developed due to practical and cost limitations,” the statement said.

Under a low growth scenario Sri Lanka could install 500MW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, contributing 5 percent of the country’s power generation capacity. By 2040, the installed capacity could grow to 1000MW and then to 2000MW 2050.

Under a high growth scenario, the roadmap envisages deployment of 1000MW of offshore wind installed capacity by 2030.

By 2040, the installed capacity could grow to 2500MW and then to 4000MW by 2050.

There are technical and other risks to developing off-shore wind, including grid stability. Off shore wind is also generally more expensive than on-shore wind.

Sri Lanka’s Windforce was recently given the go ahead to build the first power plant which reduces ramping.

“Sri Lanka aims to have 70 percent of our electricity generated from renewable sources by 2030, and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050,” Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said in the statement

A 500MW offshore wind capacity could reduce up to 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year and 1000MW could avoid 1 million tonnes of annual carbon dioxide emissions.

The World Bank Group was providing assistance to the government in planning and implementing de-risking measures, including further site investigations, environmental and social scoping, wind resource assessment, legal and regulatory analysis, further stakeholder consultations, and policy support.

“Over the lifetime of a 500 MW offshore wind farm, the Sri Lankan economy could benefit from over US$570 million of gross value added,” Asela Dissanayake, Acting Country Manager, Sri Lanka, World Bank said.

NPC’s responsibility to clean up Police Service: NMSJ

0

Colombo (LNW): The National Police Commission’s (NPC) responsibility is to clean up the Police Service in Sri Lanka, and if there are officers within the Sri Lanka Police itself who file false charges against honest Police officers for the mere benefit of politicians, the NPC including its Chairperson should pay attention to such, the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) said in a statement.

Full Statement:

We are grateful to the Judiciary for acquitting four skilled, brave, honest and independent Police officers including former Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Director, Shani Abeysekara, who suffered severe injustice in a fully politicised regime. We, as the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) raised our voice about the injustice caused to them from the beginning.

Abeysekara and other officers who became the victims of a programme launched by a group of opportunists merely for their political benefits, endured great mental trauma over the past few years. They were stopped from getting their salaries and other benefits, and such incidents should never happen again.

In the name of humanity, we strongly believe that the National Police Commission will act to correct the injustice caused to these officers, and grant them the salaries and promotions they deserve at the earliest possible.

Furthermore, if there are officers within the Police Department itself who file false charges against honest Police officers to please politicians, we appeal to the NPC including its Chairman to pay attention to such, clean the Police service, and make it earn public respect again!

At the outset, High Commissioner Moragoda thanked the Indian Road Transport and Highways Minister for the cooperation that the latter extended to him during his tenure in New Delhi.

He also apprised the Minister of the references to connectivity, particularly those that are on road connectivity, in the Indo-Lanka joint document “Promoting Connectivity, Catalysing Prosperity: India-Sri Lanka Economic Partnership Vision”, which was issued following bilateral talks between the President of Sri Lanka and the Prime Minister of India in July. The High Commissioner and the Minister discussed ways and means through which the connectivity goals stipulated in the joint Vision document could be materialized.

The discussion also focussed on the cooperation in promoting alternatives to fossil fuels such as electricity and bio-fuels in the transport sector. These alternatives were seen as highly cost-effective and environment friendly, suitable to a country like Sri Lanka. The Minister spoke on the Indian experience in alternative fuels and expressed his willingness to share the relevant expertise with Sri Lanka.

High Commissioner Moragoda invited Minister Gadkari to visit Sri Lanka at a mutually convenient time, which the Minister accepted.

High Commissioner Moragoda also presented to Minister Gadkari a stone obtained from the stream flowing besides the Seetha Amman Temple in Seetha Eliya (Ashoka Vatika) in Sri Lanka, which is believed to be the site where Seetha was held captive according to the Ramayana.

Hailing from the State of Maharashtra, Shri Nitin Gadkari is the longest serving Minister for Road Transport and Highways of India currently running his tenure for over eight years since 2014. He also served as the President of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) from 2009 to 2013.
