Anjana Priyanjith, Secretary General of the All Ceylon Private Bus Owners’ Association, stated that they would only agree to a revision of bus fares which would protect the Private Bus Industry, the private bus owners could comply with and would pay better wages to bus employees.

In an alternate option, a diesel subsidy could be provided, Priyanjith emphasised, adding that otherwise the minor revision of bus fares set into motion from tomorrow cannot be complied with.

Should the government not increase the minimum bus fare by Rs. 20, further interventions will be made in receiving the diesel subsidy, he added, warning that they are not hesitant to intensify a trade union action in this regard as well.

Priyanjith went on saying that the State Minister of Transport has no power to predict the bus fares in the event that the price of bread is predicted by the bakery owner and the price of plain tea by the hotel owner.
