0

It is reported that a serious clash has taken place between the Chief Government Whip, Johnston Fernando, Minister of Highways and Wimalaweera Dissanayake, State Minister of Forest Protection, Elephant Fences and Trenches Construction, Reforestation, and Forest Resources.

Minister of State Wimalaweera who participated in a meeting of the Ampara Regional Development Committee recently had questioned the officials regarding the awarding of road construction contracts in the area and they had said that they would be decided by the officials of the Ministry of Highways, Colombo.

The enraged state minister had scolded a group of officials at the Ministry of Highways in Colombo and videos of the incident had been circulating on social media.

It is said that the Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando had immediately telephoned the Minister of State for Wimalaweera after hearing about this and had questioned him about scolding and threatening his officials.

It was reported that Minister Wimalaweera replied to Minister Johnston in his usual style, reminding him that he was the one who established the politics of Pohottuwa in the Ampara District and that he had been in politics with the Rajapaksas for a long time and challenged Johnston Fernando to do what he could.

Sources said that Minister of State Wimalaweera Dissanayake who had gone directly to the Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa after this had requested him to take action against Johnston Fernando.

Basil’s English is the ‘Second Language Strategy’ which suits Sri Lanka – Pathirana

0

Dr. Mahinda Pathirana, a theorist of the SLPP and also the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Press Council, says that the second language strategy suitable for Sri Lanka is the English system used by the Minister of Finance, Basil Rajapaksa.

The videos of Basil Rajapaksa’s interview with the Daily Mirror have caused a great deal of controversy on social media and Mahinda Pathirana has expressed this view in this regard.

Following is the statement made by Mahinda Pathirana on his Facebook page.

PS:

We do agree with Dr. Mahinda Pathirana. When we look at Basil Rajapaksa’s recent speech in Parliament and his interview with the Daily Mirror, we also see that this is the most appropriate second language strategy for Sri Lanka.

We agree with Mahinda Pathirana’s statement, especially in a situation where we have to find an ‘Oxford dictionary or translator’ to understand the English used by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. Language should only be used as a means of communication.

However, another theoretician of the SLPP, Jagath Wellawatte, has faced injustice here. He lost his post as Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Australia due to a similar video. He is currently the Ambassador to Italy. In fact, if Mahinda Pathirana had said the above statement earlier, Jagath Wellawatte would not have lost his post as High Commissioner to Australia.

0

India and Sri Lanka hosted their first joint online HWPL Peace Education webinar.

This webinar invited 68 educators from 33 schools, 3 students, and 4 religious leaders from India, Sri Lanka, and Gambia to discuss means of developing online peace education materials.

During the webinar, participants paid keen attention to the HWPL peace education, which emphasizes the cultivation of peace-protecting civic consciousness and recognizes the essential role of educators in addressing human rights violations and educational inequalities deepened by COVID-19.

Ms. Chetnaben Vijaybhai Gora, Principal of the Kotda Ugamana Primary School, who shares same sentiment in bringing everyone together as one through education, said, “As I completed the 12 sessions of the HWPL Peace Education, I found the goal of education itself.” She also pointed out the changes in students who are now aware of the connection and harmony between humanity and the ecosystem, through peace education.

According to HWPL officials who hosted the webinar, classrooms in Sri Lanka will hold peace education this year. Under the leadership of Sri Lankan educational officials who attended the webinar, a peace teacher workshop will be held from February 10th to march 17th in the preparation for Sri Lanka’s first peace education.

HWPL, a international peace organization registered as a special consultative position with the UN Economic and Social Council, has signed MOUs with 303 schools in 53 countries from 2016 to the present. A TeachingGoesOn campaign and peace teacher training are also underway with teachers around the world to overcome the public education crisis, educational inequality, and problems with student alienation caused by the pandemic.

SRI LANKA: Armed attack on well-known TV journalist’s home

0

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) calls for an independent investigation into an attack by armed men on the home of well-known Sri Lankan TV journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama after he received death threats linked to his work. Those responsible for this punitive raid must be identified, and the authorities must end all forms of harassment of journalists, RSF says.

After a loud noise woke Chamuditha Samarawickrama at around 2:10 a.m. on 14 February, he heard shots being fired in his direction. He later found that the shots had shattered some of the windows of his home and that faeces had been thrown at walls.

Surveillance camera footage showed that at least four masked gunmen stormed his home in Piliyandala, a suburb of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo. To get into the compound, they threatened his guard by putting a gun to his temple, and afterwards they left in the white van in which they had arrived.

The police have not established the motive for the attack but Samarawickrama had recently reported receiving several death threats on his phone in connection with his work,

The host of two Hiru TV shows, “Salakuna” and “Patthare Wisthare,” Samarawickrama also conducts interviews on his own YouTube channel called “Truth with Chamuditha.” In a recent interview, a former police officer who has obtained asylum in Britain criticised the methods used by the Rajapaksa family, one of whose members, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, is the current president.

Reminder of most repressive period

Defence minister when his brother, Mahinda Rajapaksa, was president from 2005 to 2015, Gotabaya Rajapaksa was known then as the head of the “white van gang” because of the vehicles this unit used to kidnap and kill journalists. At least 14 journalists disappeared after being taken away in the notorious white vans, which were similar in every way to the van used in this week’s raid on Samarawickrama’s home.

“The modus operandi used in this attack on Chamuditha Samarawickrama recalls the height of the persecution of Sri Lankan journalists,” said Daniel Bastard. “The perpetrators and instigators of this unacceptable act of intimidation must be identified and prosecuted. We urge the government to end all forms of harassment of the country’s journalists.”

The attack on Samarawickrama has prompted outrage in mainstream media outlets serving Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese majority, who live in the south of the island. Journalists based in the north and east, where the Tamil and/or Muslim minorities live, are also constantly subjected to physical and judicial harassment by the authorities.

Pressured to name sources

In the eastern city of Batticaloa, for example, a court ordered Punniyamoorthy Sasikaran, a journalist who is also the city’s press club treasurer, to remain at home on 4 February on the pretext of preventing him from covering a “banned protest” that was never planned and did not take place. Since mid-2021, Sasikaran has been repeatedly questioned by the Batticaloa police special crime branch and pressured to reveal his sources.

When another Tamil minority journalist, Selvakumar Nilanthan, was questioned by members of the Batticaloa terrorism investigation division last July, he was pressured to hand over the passwords that would give them access to his messaging services and bank accounts.

In January 2021, RSF revealed that the authorities in Batticaloa were still holding Murugupillai Kokulathasan, a freelance journalist who had been arrested in the utmost secrecy on a terrorism charge the previous November.

Sri Lanka is ranked 127th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2021 World Press Freedom Index.
