Cabinet Spokesman and Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, announced yesterday that the Government has approved a proposal to deploy 100 modern, low-entry, and comfortable buses for public transport through a newly established subsidiary company under the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB).

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet press briefing, the Minister explained that the initiative will be launched as a pilot project, with the new buses to be imported and operated along several major transport corridors including Colombo, Makumbura (Kottawa), Kaduwela, Kadawatha, and Moratuwa.

The Minister emphasised that this initial rollout will be state-run, with the possibility of future expansion involving private sector collaboration based on the project’s success. He noted that the initiative was originally proposed in the 2025 Budget and has now received Cabinet approval. The proposal was submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, and the new subsidiary company will be formed under the SLTB in accordance with the Companies Act No. 7 of 2007.

KDU Medical Faculty Admission Restrictions to Remain Pending Review of National Medical Needs

Education Deputy Minister Madhura Seneviratne informed Parliament yesterday that the current restriction on admitting local civil students to the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) medical faculty will continue until the Government completes a comprehensive review of the country’s medical workforce requirements.

He clarified that the restriction—imposed from the third batch of admissions via the Z-score system through the University Grants Commission—is a temporary measure. Stressing that the Government has no intention of closing any university, the Deputy Minister reiterated that the move is part of an ongoing assessment and not a permanent policy shift.

Responding to a query raised by MP Ravi Karunanayake, Seneviratne noted that while the restriction had drawn criticism, particularly over concerns about its impact on student access, it is solely intended to allow time for a detailed evaluation of Sri Lanka’s future needs for medical practitioners.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and several opposition MPs strongly criticised the decision, arguing that it had deprived both local and international students of vital educational opportunities. They called on the Government to reverse the restriction and ensure continued access to medical education through institutions such as KDU.

The meeting placed particular emphasis on enhancing cooperation across political, economic, defence, and investment spheres.

President Dissanayake highlighted Sri Lanka’s recent strides toward economic stability and shared details of the Government’s ongoing efforts to eliminate corruption and fraud. He also expressed gratitude for Australia’s continued support, especially in maritime security operations, and its assistance in curbing illegal trade, human trafficking, terrorism, and arms smuggling. The President underscored Sri Lanka’s status as a secure destination for both tourism and foreign investment.

Deputy Prime Minister Marles reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Sri Lanka, noting the deep-rooted 70-year economic and political relationship between the two countries. He praised the Government’s anti-corruption drive and said a key objective of his visit was to explore ways to enhance collaboration in trade, tourism, investment, and broader political and economic relations.

The Australian delegation included Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Paul Stephens, Secretary of the Department of Defence Gregory Laurence Moriarty, Senior Adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister Simon Eric O’Connor, and Australian Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Lalita Kapur. Government Investigates Misuse of Mahaweli Lands by Politically Influential Individuals

Deputy Minister of Land and Irrigation, Susil Ranasinghe, told Parliament yesterday that the Government has initiated an investigation into the misuse of lands distributed for cultivation projects under the Mahaweli Authority during previous regimes. The move comes following multiple claims made in Parliament alleging that large plots of land had been privately allocated to politically influential individuals—such as actors, cricketers, and former ministers—without any actual cultivation taking place.

According to the Deputy Minister, the investigation is aimed at identifying the individuals who received these lands, the total extent of land involved, the original purpose for which the land was allocated, and the current status of these plots. He emphasized that the Government is working to determine appropriate actions to resolve the matter and ensure that such land allocations are used as originally intended, especially for agriculture.

Ranasinghe stressed the importance of consulting the Regional Coordination Committees (RCCs) before making any decisions on land distribution, highlighting that collective decisions by RCCs are essential for ensuring transparency and accountability. He also urged that any issues related to Mahaweli lands should first be reported to the respective RCCs, with their decisions then forwarded to the Ministry for further action.

Raising the issue in Parliament, NPP Polonnaruwa District MP Pathmasiri Bandara claimed that land parcels ranging from 100 to 500 acres in the Mahaweli B and D zones had been allocated to influential individuals through unofficial private deals. He noted that many of these lands remain uncultivated and that ownership in some cases has been transferred or sold for profit, contradicting the lands’ original purpose of supporting agricultural development. Bandara called for decisive Government action to reclaim and properly utilize these lands for their intended public benefit.

Sri Lanka Set to Launch Starlink Internet Paving the Way for a Digital Revolution

June 03, Colombo (LNW):Sri Lanka is poised to introduce Starlink satellite internet services, marking a significant leap forward in the nation’s digital transformation agenda. The Ministry of Digital Economy has confirmed that all government approvals and regulatory clearances are now in place, and the service will be operationalized immediately upon receipt of final technical dashboard data from Starlink.

This major development was announced following a high-level bilateral meeting in Singapore between Sri Lanka’s State Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, and Ambassador Steve Lang, the U.S. Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy. The meeting, organized by the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore, was held on the sidelines o the 2025 Tech Summit Asia.

Minister Weeraratne stated that there are no further bureaucratic hurdles left for the launch of Starlink, and once the anticipated operational dashboard data is provided, the service can begin without delay. “All procedural requirements have been fulfilled, and we are ready to activate Starlink in Sri Lanka,” he confirmed.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has already granted Starlink a Telecommunications Service Provider Licence, allowing the company to offer satellite-based broadband services across the country. Starlink’s presence is expected to be particularly transformative for remote and underserved areas, where traditional connectivity infrastructure has been lacking or inefficient.

The Sri Lankan delegation and U.S. representatives also explored broader avenues for digital collaboration. Key topics included partnerships with global tech giants like Google and Meta, the establishment of AI-driven data centers, and enhanced cybersecurity frameworks, including advancements in the Cybersecurity Bill and revisions to both the Online Safety Bill and the Data Protection Act.

Ambassador Lang underlined the critical importance of robust digital infrastructure and regulatory systems, labeling these reforms as both “urgent and transformative” for Sri Lanka’s future. He reiterated Washington’s continued commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s digital advancement through strategic collaborations and policy guidance.

To ensure equitable access to Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet, the government is planning targeted relief packages for key sectors such as education and fisheries, which are often marginalized in terms of digital access. Furthermore, the government has assured that stringent regulatory oversight will be maintained to ensure Starlink’s compliance with data protection laws and service obligations.

As Sri Lanka moves toward becoming a digitally inclusive economy, Starlink’s arrival is expected to play a pivotal role in bridging the digital divide, fostering innovation, and enabling nationwide digital accessibility.

UK Firm Joins Sri Lanka Mineral Boom amid Rising Indian Interest

June 03, Colombo (LNW):Amid growing regional interest in Sri Lanka’s rich mineral reserves, British firm Capital Metals PLC has entered the island’s mining sector with backing from local investment company Ambeon Capital PLC. This move follows a wave of Indian interest, particularly in securing critical minerals needed for renewable energy and strategic industries.

India has intensified efforts to secure resources like lithium, graphite, and nickel through regional partnerships under its National Critical Mineral Mission. Sri Lanka, with its substantial deposits of industrial and critical minerals, has emerged as a key focus. Delegations from India’s Ministry of Mines and major public sector companies have visited Sri Lanka to assess collaboration opportunities and evaluate local mining assets. Indian interest centers especially on Sri Lanka’s highly pure vein graphite, vital for lithium-ion battery production.

As India looks to expand its mineral footprint, Ambeon Capital has opted to diversify its investment strategy by partnering with UK-listed Capital Metals in a major mineral sands project in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province. According to a filing on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), the “Taprobane Minerals Project” is considered one of the world’s highest-grade mineral sand ventures, with scope for resource expansion and technological upgrades.

Ambeon’s initial investment of Rs. 600 million, to be made by June 4, 2025, will be directed to the project’s Sri Lankan holding company, Redgate Lanka Ltd. In return, Ambeon will receive 59.7 million ordinary shares in Capital Metals, representing a 14.1% stake in the UK firm. These shares will be listed on the London Stock Exchange, enabling Ambeon to participate in Capital Metals’ global mineral strategy.

Capital Metals will conduct operations in Sri Lanka through two local entities holding exploration and industrial licenses for mineral sands such as ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and garnet. These materials are critical for industries ranging from electronics to aerospace and renewable energy.

Meanwhile, India is strengthening ties with Sri Lanka under the Indo-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (ISLFTA), which offers duty concessions on mineral exports. Sri Lanka’s new national mineral policy also aims to attract foreign investors and partners by encouraging joint ventures, especially in the critical minerals space.

With India and now the UK investing in the country’s mineral wealth, Sri Lanka is poised to become a regional hub for critical mineral exploration and processing, balancing geopolitical interests while tapping into the global green energy supply chain.

Tragic incident at Kuliyapitiya Technical College sparks Police action

June 03, Colombo (LNW): In a distressing event at Kuliyapitiya Technical College, four students have been arrested following an incident that allegedly drove a fellow student to attempt suicide.

The troubling episode, linked to reported ragging, has raised serious concerns about student welfare at the institution.

Yesterday afternoon, a first-year female student reportedly leapt into a nearby lake in a desperate act. Local residents acted swiftly, pulling her from the water and ensuring she was rushed to Kuliyapitiya Hospital for urgent care.

Medical staff have confirmed that, whilst shaken, the young woman is stable and receiving treatment, with her condition described as non-life-threatening.

Initial police inquiries suggest the student’s actions were a direct response to a humiliating ragging ordeal, a practice that continues to plague educational institutions despite efforts to curb it.

The four arrested students, all enrolled at the same college, are now in custody as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation aims to uncover the extent of the ragging and whether others were involved in perpetuating or enabling the behaviour.

The incident has sparked outrage amongst the local community, with calls for stricter measures to prevent such harmful traditions.

Kuliyapitiya Police are continuing their inquiries, vowing to address any systemic issues that may have contributed to this alarming event.
