Sri Lanka’s Exports Near $10B Mark amid Strong Growth Trends

0

By:Staff Writer

August 26, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka’s export sector is experiencing a strong resurgence in 2025, with total export earnings from January to July nearing the US$10 billion mark, according to recent data released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) and Sri Lanka Customs. This milestone marks a 7.79% increase year-on-year and signals a potential breakthrough in the country’s trade performance after years of economic challenges.

Between January and July 2025, total export earnings reached US$9.99 billion, comprising both merchandise and services exports. With five months remaining in the year, experts are optimistic that Sri Lanka will surpass its annual export target of US$17 billion. Mangala Wijesinghe, Chairman and CEO of the Export Development Board (EDB), stated that current momentum could see the country exceeding its set goals, provided current trends hold steady.

Merchandise exports have been particularly strong, totaling US$7.8 billion during the first seven months—a 7.22% rise compared to the same period in 2024. The month of July alone recorded US$1.3 billion in merchandise exports, showing a notable 15.37% year-on-year growth. Key contributors include the textile and apparel sector, gems and jewellery, and petroleum products.

Services exports, often overshadowed by physical goods, have emerged as a significant growth driver. Between January and July 2025, services exports surged to US$2.19 billion—a 9.86% increase from the previous year. Within this sector, ICT and BPM services accounted for US$897.5 million, up 7.23%, while transport and logistics services rose sharply by 21.24% to reach US$1.19 billion.

The services sector’s expansion is not only helping diversify Sri Lanka’s export basket but also providing high-value job opportunities, particularly in urban tech hubs. The growing emphasis on non-traditional exports reflects a deliberate shift towards modern, service-oriented economic structures.

Industry analysts credit the growth to improved competitiveness, wider market access, and targeted government incentives implemented over the past few years. However, there is cautious optimism about the future trajectory. Since the new government took office in September 2024, its long-term trade and economic policies remain largely undefined. While current export performance is encouraging, sustaining this momentum will depend on the clarity, consistency, and effectiveness of the government’s future strategies.

Investors and exporters are now watching closely for policy directions in areas such as trade agreements, regulatory reforms, tax structures, and investment incentives. Without clear signals, the sector’s growth could face headwinds, particularly amidst global economic uncertainties.

August 26, Colombo (LNW): Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been granted bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (26), following a high-profile hearing into allegations of misusing public funds.

The charges stem from a 2023 overseas visit, which investigators allege was carried out for personal reasons under the guise of official state business.

Wickremesinghe was taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department on August 22 and remanded under provisions of the Public Property Act. The court had previously ordered that he remain in remand custody until August 26, pending further legal proceedings.

Today’s hearing commenced at 2:00 PM, with the former president appearing remotely via Zoom from the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for multiple health complications.

August 26, Colombo (LNW): As legal proceedings continue at the Fort Magistrate’s Court against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, a large crowd of United National Party (UNP) supporters and activists gathered outside the court premises today, staging a vocal protest against the current administration.

Wickremesinghe, who is presently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital whilst under remand, is facing charges relating to the alleged misuse of public funds. He was taken into custody on August 22 by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and later remanded over accusations of undertaking a personal visit abroad under the guise of official state duties.

Whilst the case is being actively heard inside the courtroom, tensions have flared outside. Demonstrators have directed their protest at President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, displaying placards with slogans such as “AKD GO Gama”, drawing parallels with past political movements and expressing frustration over what they allege is a politically motivated case.

Court proceedings are ongoing, with the defence arguing for bail on medical grounds due to Wickremesinghe’s critical health condition, while the Attorney General’s Department maintains that the charges are serious and merit continued judicial custody.

Security around the court remains tight, as both the legal and political dimensions of the case continue to unfold.

Court Told Ex-President in Critical Health as Bail Request Considered: AG’s Office Maintains Strong Objection

August 26, Colombo (LNW): In latest developments during today’s (26) hearing at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court, counsel representing former President Ranil Wickremesinghe presented detailed medical evidence in support of a bail application, citing a serious and worsening health condition.

President’s Counsel Anuja Premaratne informed the court that the former head of state is in a precarious medical situation, revealing that three of the four major arteries in his heart are blocked. A formal medical report was submitted to support the claim.

Further elaborating, Premaratne PC noted that Wickremesinghe has also been suffering from a chronic kidney condition, which has reportedly deteriorated. Additional medical findings presented in court indicated signs of heart muscle damage and a developing lung infection—factors that, according to the defence, place his life at significant risk if he remains in remand custody.

The court is currently considering these submissions alongside strong objections raised by the Attorney General’s Department. Representing the Criminal Investigation Department, Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris argued against the granting of bail, stating that the former president’s controversial visit to the United Kingdom—central to the ongoing investigation—did not involve any official meetings with foreign heads of state, undermining its claim as a state-sanctioned engagement.

Wickremesinghe remains under judicial custody, charged under the Public Property Act over alleged misuse of government funds during the 2023 trip. The case continues to attract significant public interest, with a growing number of supporters gathering outside the courthouse in a visible show of solidarity.

August 26, Colombo (LNW): Legal proceedings involving former President Ranil Wickremesinghe were brought before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (26), with the Attorney General’s Department formally objecting to any request for bail.

The case, filed under the Public Property Act, continues as the former head of state remains in remand custody while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital.

The matter was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura. Wickremesinghe was not physically present in court due to his medical condition. Representing the Criminal Investigation Department, Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris appeared before the court and argued against granting bail, citing concerns over the seriousness of the allegations.

Peiris also informed the court that a key element of the investigation—namely the authenticity and legal basis of the invitation extended to Mr. Wickremesinghe by the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom—has yet to be verified. The invitation is central to the case, which involves accusations of misusing state funds during a 2023 overseas trip.

A team of senior defence lawyers, including President’s Counsel Thilak Marapana and Anuja Premaratne, appeared on behalf of Wickremesinghe. The defence is expected to file further submissions in the coming days.

Lord Paul’s Invite Got Ranil into Jail?

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe now languishes in jail because the prosecuting lawyers appear not to fully understand the true role of a Head of State. The visit in question was not a private jaunt but one undertaken at the invitation of the late Lord Swraj Paul, Baron Paul of Marylebone (1931–2025)—the Indian-born British industrialist, philanthropist, and parliamentarian who founded the Caparo Group and built it into a global enterprise. Lord Paul, who had a longstanding relationship with the Wickremesinghe family, invited him for his felicitation and convocation, while also pursuing his keen interest in establishing a university in Sri Lanka.

Elevated to the House of Lords in 1996, Lord Paul served as Deputy Speaker and was appointed to the Privy Council in 2009. A renowned philanthropist, he founded the Ambika Paul Foundation in memory of his daughter and served as Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton and the University of Westminster. Knighted in 1978 and awarded India’s Padma Bhushan in 1983, he was a leading advocate of Indo-UK relations and a prominent figure on the Sunday Times Rich List, with an estimated fortune of £2 billion at his passing in London on 21 August 2025. Lord Paul was also a benefactor to Sri Lanka, extending support during the tsunami, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the recent economic crisis.

Against this backdrop, it is regrettable that the Attorney General’s Department has failed to properly examine the context, unfairly placing responsibility on the Former President.

Shasheendra Rajapaksa Further Remanded Amid Corruption Inquiry Over Land Compensation Claims

0

August 26, Colombo (LNW): Former State Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa has been ordered to remain in remand custody until August 29, as the legal proceedings against him continue in connection with a corruption investigation led by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

The ruling was delivered by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, according to court sources.

Rajapaksa was taken into custody on August 06 at his residence in Nugegoda by officers from the Bribery Commission. His arrest is linked to an incident involving compensation claims for a property damaged during the island-wide protests that erupted in May 2022.

The property in question—a structure said to have been constructed without formal approval—was located on land owned by the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority in the Sevanagala–Kiriibban Wewa area. The building sustained fire damage during the public unrest on May 09, 2022, when widespread protests swept across the country in response to the economic and political crisis.

While the Bribery Commission stated that the land in question was state-owned and therefore ineligible for compensation, it is alleged that Rajapaksa sought to secure financial reimbursement through unofficial means.

Investigators claim he used his former position to pressure officials responsible for damage assessment into processing a compensation request, despite the property being legally tied to a government institution.

The accusations levelled against Rajapaksa include unlawfully attempting to influence public officials, conspiring to commit corruption, and improperly exploiting government-owned land for personal benefit.
