0

Litro Gas Lanka, Sri Lanka’s leading LPG provider, has announced significant developments in its supply and distribution network. As per the Sales & Marketing Plans for 2024, areas are identified for supplier and distribution expansion. The company has undertaken a series of strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the accessibility and reliability of LPG services across the country.

The existing distributor yards in Aluthgama, Panadura, Palamunai-Batticaloa, and Navalady-Batticaloa have been refurbished, featuring new office infrastructure and an expanded vehicle fleet. These upgrades are set to improve the quality of service and delivery efficiency.

In addition to these refurbishments, new distribution yards have been established in Wellawaya, Godakawella, Padeniya, Waradela-Kotadeniyawa, Walathapity-Ampara, and Mulamaldeniya. This expansion enhances service coverage, particularly in rural areas, providing better access to LPG for all Sri Lankans.

To support these operations, new staff members have been recruited from local communities, bolstering the workforce and promoting regional employment. The expansion also includes additional vehicles and infrastructure improvements, crucial for streamlining operations and ensuring efficient service delivery.

These efforts will integrate seamlessly with Litro Gas’s primary filling operations at Kerawalapitiya and the newly commissioned Mabima storage and filling facility. This integration is vital for maintaining a seamless supply chain and addressing the increasing demand for LPG across the country.

Litro Gas’s expanded and refurbished network will support the seamless supply of LPG to 4.5 million domestic households, 12,500 dealer points/sales points, over 16,000 HoReCa establishments (Hotels, Restaurants, Catering), and more than 6,000 medium and large commercial businesses.

Distributors have shown increased confidence in the company’s leadership and organizational sustainability, recognizing LPG as an essential service rather than just a commodity. This belief in the growth and future of LPG usage underscores the importance of Litro Gas’s role in ensuring energy security.

Mr. Muditha Peiris, Chairman & CEO – Litro Gas Lanka, highlighted the company’s commitment to ensure access to clean and safe energy for all Sri Lankans, stating, “Access to clean and safe energy is not a privilege but a fundamental right of every citizen. Our expansion efforts are a testament to our commitment to providing uninterrupted LPG supply to all parts of the country.”

These enhancements to the distribution network follow the successful commissioning of the state-of-the-art Mabima facility, demonstrating Litro Gas’s commitment to operational excellence and ensuring that all citizens have access to this essential resource.

During a meeting in Colombo with Dayani Mendis, Director General of the United Nations and Human Rights at the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, González underscored Sri Lanka’s role within the group of 123 nations that signed a declaration at the UN Human Rights Council, advocating for the removal of Cuba from Washington’s list of State sponsors of terrorism.

The discussions between González and Mendis also touched upon the mutual support both nations provide to each other in international forums and United Nations organisations, highlighting the strong diplomatic relationship between Sri Lanka and Cuba.

In a dedicated effort to address potential safety concerns, AMW recently launched a comprehensive recall for Suzuki WagonR models, to rectify an issue that could lead to inaccurate fuel gauges and engine stalling.

The safety recall was initiated to address fuel impurity blockages in the fuel system, paying special focus to the accuracy of fuel readings in the vehicles instrument cluster panel.

Colombo Port City reaches Major Milestone with Over 100 Companies as Authorized Persons

By: Staff Writer

August 29, Colombo (LNW): Port City Colombo has reached a significant milestone by onboarding over 100 companies as Authorized Persons (APs) as of August 24th, 2024.

These companies span a diverse array of sectors, including IT, Finance, Professional Services, Shipping, Logistics, Tourism, Healthcare, Real Estate Development, and Global Capability Centres, all identified within the Colombo Port City Special Economic Zone.

Among these APs, twenty-two companies have been recognized as Businesses of Strategic Importance (BSIs).

The Colombo Port City Economic Commission (CPCEC) is currently evaluating the BSI status of additional APs. The steady influx of companies registering as APs highlights growing investor confidence in Port City Colombo.

This progress aligns with Port City Colombo’s vision to attract high-value foreign direct investments (FDIs), with the diversity of companies underscoring the SEZ’s focus on service-oriented sectors.

Several prominent banks, including Sampath Bank, Commercial Bank of Ceylon, Hatton National Bank, and others, have applied to establish offshore banking branches within the Colombo Port City SEZ, operating under new offshore banking regulations introduced on July 26th, 2024.

These developments are expected to create demand for 30,000 to 50,000 square meters of office space in Port City Colombo. The Business Centre, a premier IT and Commercial Park located in the heart of the Financial District, is slated to launch in November 2024, coinciding with an anticipated surge in tenants.

Port City Colombo offers a progressive regulatory environment that simplifies business operations, coupled with dynamic lifestyle offerings in a master-planned city.

The SEZ is economically insulated from domestic macroeconomic challenges, providing investors with attractive fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, including transactions in designated foreign currencies, tax exemptions for over 25 years, and 100% capital and profit repatriation.

Additionally, Port City Colombo offers export-oriented businesses direct connectivity to key markets in the Middle East, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific regions, facilitating their growth and expansion.

To benefit from the exemptions or incentives under the CPCEC Act, commercial entities interested in investing or setting up operations in Port City Colombo must first qualify as APs and be designated as BSIs.

The CPCEC, acting as a single-window facilitator, oversees this streamlined process and regulates all business activities within the SEZ.

With these developments, Port City Colombo is positioning itself as a driving force in Sri Lanka’s future economic growth and is now prepared to welcome foreign direct investments and operational businesses.

Supreme Court dismisses petition against President’s actions on IGP appointment

0

August 29, Colombo (LNW): The Supreme Court yesterday (28) dismissed a fundamental rights petition that sought to compel the President to appoint an Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The petition, filed by Attorney-at-Law R.S.P. Ranasuriya, also called for the President to be disqualified as a candidate in the upcoming Presidential Election, alleging a violation of the Constitution for failing to comply with Supreme Court directives.

The court, however, found no merit in the claims and ordered the dismissal of the petition, imposing a court fee of Rs. 50,000 on the petitioner.

This ruling underscores the judiciary’s stance on maintaining the separation of powers and its cautious approach towards interfering in executive decisions, particularly in the context of sensitive appointments like that of the Inspector General of Police.

The petitioner had argued that the President’s alleged non-compliance with the Supreme Court’s orders constituted a breach of the Constitution, rendering him unfit for candidacy in the Presidential Election.

However, the apex court’s decision to dismiss the petition reflects a judicial reluctance to engage in what could be perceived as a politically charged issue, particularly in the lead-up to national elections.

Foreign Minister warns against renegotiating IMF Deal, cites risk of economic instability

0

August 29, Colombo (LNW): Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Sabry, has issued a stark warning regarding the potential repercussions of renegotiating Sri Lanka’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), labelling it a high-risk and potentially futile endeavour.

Speaking at a press conference titled ‘Two Years of Progress and Advancement’ at the Presidential Media Centre, Minister Sabry cautioned that reopening negotiations with the IMF could endanger the disbursement of the next tranche scheduled for December.

Additionally, he highlighted that such a move might also jeopardise further funding from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

“If these negotiations are disrupted, Sri Lanka stands to lose between USD 1.2 billion and 1.3 billion from December 2024 to January 2025, which could plunge the country into deeper economic instability,” Sabry asserted.

The Minister also reflected on the challenges faced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2022, noting that the department had been tasked with repairing fractured international relationships and restoring global confidence in Sri Lanka.

“Over the past two and a half years, we have worked tirelessly to stabilise the nation by strengthening our foreign relations and leveraging them to boost the economy,” he stated.

Ranil: The Dark Horse in the Race

0

By: Adolf

August 29, Colombo (LNW): The term “dark horse” in politics refers to a candidate who is relatively unknown or unlikely to win but who gains unexpected support or momentum during an election, eventually becoming a serious contender. When a presidential candidate is described as a “dark horse,” it typically means that they weren’t initially considered a major player in the race. However, due to various factors—such as effective campaigning, appealing to a wide range of voters, or benefiting from opponents’ missteps—they manage to surpass expectations and become a significant challenger.

Ranil’s Position

Current surveys present a mixed picture, with different results and messages. Some place Ranil Wickremesinghe in a distant third, positioning the main contest between Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Sajith Premadasa. Both parties have been actively promoting surveys on social media to influence public opinion. The Election Commission has taken steps to curb such activities, but the situation remains fluid.

The accuracy of political predictions is always in question, as seen in recent elections in India, where even the Prime Minister struggled to secure a majority. This underscores the importance of understanding the complex dynamics at play.

Economy and stability seem to be the top priorities for voters, areas where Ranil Wickremesinghe has shown his strength. On issues like corruption and poverty alleviation, Anura Dissanayake appears to have the edge, while Sajith Premadasa is also seen as a strong advocate for the underprivileged. However, when it comes to actual performance, Wickremesinghe stands out as the only candidate with a proven track record. Anura Dissanayake represents the call for change, appealing to those who seek a new direction.

If we consider this as a hiring decision, would we prioritize sentiment over proven performance? Ranil Wickremesinghe, despite his challenges—such as the Visa scandal, the excesses of his staff, and his conflict with the judiciary—brings a wealth of political experience and diplomatic acumen that his rivals lack.History is replete with examples of dark horse candidates who, despite initial obscurity, went on to make significant impact at an election. The election marks a critical juncture for the country as it struggles to rebuild after the 2022 crisis, with voters weighing continuity against calls for sweeping change. For continuity Ranil Wickramasinghe has the edge and for change Anura Kumara is ahead of the President and Sajith Premadasa.

Ex-Western Provincial Councillor taken in alleged role in ‘Club Wasantha’ murder

0

August 29, Colombo (LNW): A former Western Provincial Councillor has been apprehended on charges of assisting and harbouring individuals implicated in the high-profile murder of businessman Surendra Wasantha Perera, alias ‘Club Wasantha’.

The suspect is accused of providing shelter to both the second gunman and the getaway driver involved in the fatal shooting, which also claimed the life of another individual.

Authorities have been intensifying efforts to track down and apprehend all those connected to the crime.

The ex-councillor’s involvement raises concerns about the extent of support networks available to those engaged in organised criminal activities, particularly when individuals in positions of influence are implicated.

The murder of Surendra Wasantha Perera, a prominent businessman with a well-known public profile, has drawn widespread attention, prompting a swift and thorough investigation by law enforcement.

Certain individuals are currently in the authorities’ custody and it is determined to bring all perpetrators and accomplices to justice.
