July 06, Colombo (LNW): More than 1,000 Police officers have been dismissed from service following disciplinary action over a range of offences, according to Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala.

The Minister said a number of those removed from the Police force were found to have engaged in serious criminal activities, including drug trafficking and maintaining associations with organised criminal groups.

He added that disciplinary action was also taken against officers convicted of corruption-related offences, such as accepting bribes, as well as those found guilty of neglecting their official responsibilities.

Wijepala stressed that the Government is taking a firm stance against misconduct within the Police service, noting that complaints lodged against officers are being investigated without delay.
