September 17, Colombo (LNW): China is set to assist Sri Lanka in modernising its judicial system through greater digitalisation and the adoption of artificial intelligence technology.
The proposed cooperation was discussed during a meeting between Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara and China’s newly appointed Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Wei Huaxiang.
A range of issues connected to the country’s ongoing judicial reforms were examined during the meeting. These included the Government’s efforts to tackle corruption, the expansion of the e-Court system, the possible use of voice-to-text technology in court proceedings, improvements to court infrastructure and measures aimed at easing overcrowding in prisons.
The handling and disposal of exhibits connected to court cases was also among the matters discussed.
During the talks, Ambassador Wei pointed to China’s experience in incorporating digital systems and artificial intelligence into its own judicial processes, highlighting the potential for technology to improve efficiency and modernise the administration of justice.
According to the Ministry of Justice, both sides expressed their willingness to maintain cooperation on Sri Lanka’s development initiatives, building on the longstanding relations and mutual understanding between Sri Lanka and China.
The proposed technological cooperation comes as Sri Lanka continues efforts to streamline public institutions and introduce digital solutions across key areas of government administration.
