Update: Supreme Court dismisses petition against Presidential Polls, imposes Rs. 500k cost

July 15, Colombo (LNW): The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has dismissed a Fundamental Rights petition filed by a lawyer seeking to prevent the Presidential election without a referendum on the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

The court imposed a Rs. 500,000 cost on the petitioner.

The three-judge bench, consisting of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Arjuna Obeysekera, and Justice Priyantha Fernando, concluded that the petition lacked merit.

Attorney-at-Law Aruna Laksiri, who filed the petition, was ordered to pay the cost by July 31.

Laksiri had argued that the 19th Amendment was not properly passed with a referendum and thus challenged the holding of a Presidential election this year under its provisions.
