May 19, Colombo (LNW): The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government has announced a fresh set of measures aimed at strengthening waste management practices across government institutions, including a complete ban on the use of single-use plastic water bottles from the end of this month.
The directive, issued through a newly released circular, has been forwarded to Ministry Secretaries, Chief Secretaries of Provincial Councils, heads of departments, and officials overseeing state corporations and statutory bodies.
Under the new regulations, all public sector institutions will be required to stop purchasing and distributing disposable plastic water bottles with effect from 31 May. Authorities say the move forms part of a wider effort to minimise plastic waste and encourage environmentally responsible practices within the public sector.
Institutional heads have also been instructed to introduce practical measures to curb the use of other single-use plastic items within office premises and during official functions.
The Ministry noted that the latest guidelines complement an earlier circular issued in April this year, which remains in force and continues to outline broader environmental responsibilities for state institutions.
Officials further emphasised that all government bodies are expected to actively implement the internationally recognised “3R” waste management approach — Reduce, Reuse and Recycle — as part of daily operations.
The circular was introduced in consultation with the Ministry of Environment, with authorities highlighting that the initiative is intended to promote sustainable administrative practices and reduce the environmental impact of public institutions nationwide.
