May 19, Colombo (LNW): The government has announced a series of regulations for this year’s Vesak season, introducing tighter oversight of Vesak zones, Dansals and public festivities in an effort to preserve the religious and cultural dignity of the Buddhist festival.
Addressing a media briefing at the Department of Government Information, Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Hiniduma Sunil Senevi stated that entertainment activities deemed inconsistent with the spiritual nature of Vesak would not be allowed. He specifically noted that events such as “head-banging” musical gatherings, horror-themed attractions and other forms of unsuitable entertainment would be prohibited during the festive period.
Authorities have also issued fresh instructions for organisers of Dansals, requesting that yellow flags be displayed instead of traditional Buddhist flags at food distribution centres in order to maintain uniformity and avoid the misuse of religious symbols.
According to the Minister, the programme will be implemented in collaboration with the All Ceylon Shasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya together with several state agencies and security institutions. Special guidelines covering Vesak decorations, public safety, traffic management and the operation of Dansals have already been circulated among organisers.
Officials said steps would also be taken to monitor decorative displays and prevent the use of inappropriate themes or excessive lighting arrangements that may detract from the spiritual significance of Vesak.
This year’s State Vesak Festival will be held under the theme, “Let us unite for the welfare of all”, with a focus on community service, religious observances and acts of compassion through Amisa and Prathipatti Pooja programmes.
The national celebrations are due to commence on 27 May at the Midellawala Purana Viharaya in Matara, with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expected to attend the opening ceremony. Religious and cultural programmes are scheduled to continue throughout the Matara District until 2 June.
Chief Secretary of the All Ceylon Shasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya, Venerable Mugunuwela Anuruddha Thera, stated that several temple development and community welfare initiatives would also be launched alongside the Vesak celebrations. He further noted that an international delegation from Vietnam is expected to participate in this year’s events, reflecting growing regional cultural ties.
