July 16, Colombo (LNW): The Ministry of Health has cautioned that the current surge in dengue infections could continue until the middle of August, with prevailing weather conditions creating favourable environments for mosquito breeding across many parts of the country.

Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa appealed to the public to play an active role in the nationwide fight against dengue by supporting prevention campaigns and maintaining clean surroundings. He stressed that households, schools, workplaces and public spaces should be regularly inspected to remove stagnant water and other potential mosquito breeding sites.

According to the Minister, the Gampaha District has recorded a notable increase in dengue infections in recent weeks, making it one of the areas requiring heightened attention from both health officials and residents.

In response to the growing risk, the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) has launched a special islandwide dengue prevention campaign covering 11 high-risk districts from today (16).

Acting Director of the NDCU, Dr. Kapila Kannangara, said the programme will be carried out over the next fortnight, with health teams conducting inspections, eliminating mosquito breeding grounds and educating communities on practical measures to curb the spread of the disease.

Health authorities have urged the public to cooperate fully with inspection teams and remain vigilant, noting that community participation remains one of the most effective tools in reducing dengue transmission.
