NBRO Issues Landslide Alert for Several Districts

August 03, Colombo (LNW): The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has intensified its landslide warnings following persistent heavy rainfall, issuing a Level 3 (Red) evacuation alert for several high-risk areas in the Kandy District.

The highest-level warning has been declared for the Divisional Secretariat areas of Pasbage Korale and Ganga Ihala Korale, where residents have been advised to remain on high alert and follow the instructions of local authorities should evacuation become necessary.

The NBRO has also issued Level 2 (Amber) landslide warnings for a number of areas considered to be at considerable risk. In the Kandy District, the warning applies to Ududumbara and Udapalatha. In the Kegalle District, the alert covers Yatiyantota and Aranayaka, while in the Nuwara Eliya District it has been issued for Ambagamuwa, Norwood, Nuwara Eliya, Kothmale East and Kothmale West. The Ratnapura District areas of Opanayaka, Imbulpe and Ratnapura have also been placed under the same warning level.

In addition, a Level 1 (Yellow) landslide warning has been announced for several other locations where the possibility of landslides, slope failures or rockfalls has increased. These include Panwila and Medadumbara in the Kandy District, Deraniyagala and Dehiowita in the Kegalle District, and Nivitigala and Kuruwita in the Ratnapura District.

The NBRO said all warnings will remain valid until 9.00 a.m. tomorrow (04), and urged residents living in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, particularly if heavy rain continues, while closely monitoring official updates and following any safety instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
