August 06, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka has reported more than 88,000 dengue infections since the beginning of 2026, with the mosquito-borne illness claiming 63 lives, according to the latest figures released by the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU).
Official data shows that a total of 88,088 cases have been detected nationwide this year, while the case fatality rate currently stands at 0.07 per cent.
The outbreak has continued to gather pace in recent months. More than 2,700 infections have already been recorded during the opening days of August, following a sharp surge in July, which saw 29,975 confirmed cases—the highest monthly total reported so far this year.
Gampaha remains the district most severely affected by the outbreak, registering 18,739 cases. Colombo follows closely with 17,490 reported infections, highlighting the continued burden on densely populated urban areas.
Public health officials have once again appealed to residents to strengthen mosquito control measures by eliminating stagnant water, clearing potential breeding sites and maintaining clean home and community environments. Authorities have stressed that sustained public participation is essential to reducing the spread of the disease.
