August 06, Colombo (LNW): The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) has prolonged its Level 2 (Amber) landslide warnings for several locations across four districts as unsettled weather continues to heighten the risk of slope failures.
The extended alerts came into effect at 9.00 a.m. today (06) and will remain valid until 9.00 a.m. tomorrow (07), covering a 24-hour period.
According to the NBRI, the Level 2 warnings apply to selected Divisional Secretariat Divisions and adjoining areas in the districts of Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura.
In the Kandy District, the warning covers the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Udadumbara, Ganga Ihala Korale, Deltota, Pasbage Korale, Doluwa, Medadumbara, Panwila and Udapalatha, together with neighbouring areas.
For the Kegalle District, the Amber alert has been issued for the Yatiyanthota, Bulathkohupitiya, Dehiowita, Aranayaka and Deraniyagala Divisional Secretariat Divisions and surrounding localities.
In the Nuwara Eliya District, residents in the Talawakelle, Ambagamuwa, Norwood, Kotmale East, Kotmale West and Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat Divisions, along with nearby areas, have also been placed under the Level 2 warning.
The alert further extends to the Ratnapura District, where the Openayake, Imbulpe and Ratnapura Divisional Secretariat Divisions and adjacent areas have been identified as being at heightened risk.
Meanwhile, the NBRI has also maintained Level 1 (Yellow) landslide warnings for selected locations in the Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura districts.
The Level 1 advisory applies to the Kegalle Divisional Secretariat Division and surrounding areas, as well as the Nivithigala and Kuruwita Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Ratnapura District.
Authorities have urged people living in areas vulnerable to landslides to remain vigilant, closely monitor official updates and take appropriate safety precautions while the prevailing adverse weather conditions persist.
