August 10, Colombo (LNW): The illegal distribution of a locally produced Sinhala film through social media has prompted a complaint to Moratuwa Police, with the film industry warning that unauthorised sharing of copyrighted material can carry serious legal consequences.
The Film Producers’ Association lodged the complaint after a film produced by Janitha Marasinghe was allegedly uploaded and circulated through Facebook and Telegram by an individual.
Association Chairman Rasitha Jinaseena said online film piracy should not be dismissed as a minor infringement, stressing that unauthorised distribution constitutes a criminal offence. He said stronger enforcement could also help producers recover financial losses caused by the illegal circulation of their work.
Police identified the individual involved as an 18-year-old school student from Koralawewa.
Following discussions between the parties, the matter was resolved after the youth was given a stern warning by mutual agreement.
Despite the settlement, the Film Producers’ Association said the incident highlights the growing challenge posed by the unauthorised distribution of films through digital platforms.
The association said it intends to continue working with relevant authorities to tackle piracy and push for stronger legal measures to protect local film productions and the financial interests of those involved in the industry.
