August 11, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka has recorded more than 90,000 dengue infections since the beginning of the year, with health authorities reporting a continued rise in cases during the first part of August.
The latest figures from the National Dengue Control Unit show that 90,306 cases have been reported nationwide so far, while 65 people have died from the disease. The current case fatality rate stands at 0.07%.
July emerged as the most severe month for dengue this year, accounting for 29,973 infections. The trend has continued into August, with health officials recording a further 4,959 cases during the first 10 days of the month.
The Western Province remains the main centre of the outbreak, contributing 47,824 cases, or nearly 53% of the national total. The Southern Province has reported 13,361 infections, followed by the Central Province with 8,027.
Among individual districts, Gampaha has recorded the highest number of cases at 19,204. Colombo follows closely with 17,955 cases, while Kandy has reported 6,413 infections.
Matara and Kalutara have also recorded substantial numbers, with 5,971 and 5,871 cases respectively.
